What is MRI Scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic scan that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of organs, soft tissues, and structures inside the body. Unlike CT scans or X-rays, MRI does not use radiation, making it very safe for repeated use.

When is MRI Scan Recommended?

  • Brain and neurological conditions (stroke, tumours, MS)
  • Spine and back pain (disc herniation, spinal cord problems)
  • Joint pain (knee, shoulder, hip, wrist)
  • Abdominal and pelvic organs
  • Liver, pancreas, and bile ducts
  • Cardiac MRI for heart conditions
  • Breast MRI for cancer screening

How to Prepare for MRI Scan

  • 1Remove all metal objects including jewellery, hairpins, and piercings before the scan
  • 2Inform the technologist if you have a pacemaker, metal implants, or cochlear implants
  • 3Inform us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • 4For abdominal MRI: fast for 4-6 hours before the scan
  • 5For contrast MRI: inform us of any allergies to contrast dye
  • 6Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners

What Happens During the MRI Scan?

You will lie on a sliding table that moves into the MRI scanner (a large cylindrical magnet). During the scan, you will hear loud knocking sounds — this is normal. The scan takes 30-60 minutes depending on the body part. You must remain very still. Some scans use a contrast dye injected through a vein to improve image clarity.
